Seventeen Hours In Joe's Basement

A Diary from the December 2007 Ubuntu LAN Party

Eleven O'Clock: I arrive at Joe Terranova's house and spend half-an-hour helping Joe and Geoff Rivell setup for the party. While Joe compiles the Battle for Wesnoth server, Geoff and I play three rounds of network multiplayer Frozen Bubble.

Noon: Bryan Quigley arrives with an apt-cacher server. We spend some time configuring Bryan's server; Joe is still compiling the Battle for Wesnoth server when Brian, Geoff, and I start a multiplayer Armagetron Advanced (Armagetron) game using a server Joe previously prepared.

One O'Clock: Sakuramboo and Christina Eater arrive, and they join our game of Armagetron. Joe occasionally asks, ``So, what else do you want to play?''

Two O'Clock: Joe organises and retrieves our lunch, burgers and fries from a local burger shop. Pete arrives bearing pudding cake. We're still playing Armagetron, but Joe uses Pete's arrival to start playing Sauerbraten, a First Person Shooter (FPS).

Three O'Clock: Bert and Joanne arrive and I help them install and play Sauerbraten.

Four O'Clock: Brett arrives; Bryan leaves. Joe attempts to try another FPS, and while he downloads and configures it, we start Armagetron.

Five O'Clock: We continue to play Armagetron; Joe's ready to play the new FPS, Urban Terror, and he keeps asking, ``So, what are you guys doing?'' Joe leaves briefly to pick up his friend Jack.

Six O'Clock: Joe convinces the group to abandon Armagetron for Urban Terror. Christina and I agree to play Scrabble instead, but we can't find a board. Joe's sister comes to our aid, and Brett joins us on the first round.

Seven O'Clock: Brian Stempin arrives. Still playing Urban Terror, Joe arranges pizza1. Before the Pizza arrives, rarely seen CHLUG member Tim Stackhouse shows up with a friend, Nick, and they begin socialising.

Eight O'Clock: We finish Scrabble; final scores: Christina, 176; Dave: 169; Brett: 148. The pizza arrives, and everyone stands and socialises. Tim and Nick decide to stay and play a game. After eating pizza, a few people play Urban Terror, a few people play other games, and a few people mess with their system configurations. The hour ends with with everyone playing Armagetron.

Midnight: Christina re-appears. Most of us continue to play Armagetron, but Pete convinces Christina and Joe to play FreeSpace.

One O'Clock: Sakuramboo leaves. Everyone is weary of Armagetron around 01:30, and the default game becomes Warsow. Brett and Jack leave.

Two O'Clock: still playing Warsow at 02:50, the LAN party ends.

Three O'Clock: Joe, Christina, Brian, and I remain. We talk the hour away.

Four O'Clock: at 04:05, Brian and I leave.

Footnotes
  1. Nobody gave Joe money for the Pizza. Writing this blog reminds me of our failure, and I'll make up for it next time I see Joe.

I didn't take notes during the LAN Party, and so I expect this blog is partially inaccurate. Please tell me about any mistakes.
